There is no single medical school that is objectively best for every applicant. The universities below are useful options to compare because they represent different course structures, locations, entry standards and approaches to selecting international students.

Fee note: where a university has not yet published its 2027 overseas Medicine fee, the table uses the latest available official figure only as a planning reference. Do not treat a 2026 fee as the amount you will definitely pay in 2027.

Leading Medical Schools in England: What Makes Them Different?

A ranking position alone does not explain what studying at a medical school will actually be like. The differences below are more useful when deciding which universities should make your UCAS shortlist.

University of Oxford

Oxford’s standard Medicine course lasts six years. The early years place strong emphasis on medical science before students progress into the clinical stage. Teaching also includes Oxford’s college tutorial system, which means students receive regular small-group academic teaching alongside lectures and practical work.

For 2027 entry, the standard A-level offer is A*AA. Applicants need Chemistry and at least one of Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics at the required level. UCAT is required.

Oxford’s main 2027 Medicine course page currently states a maximum of 14 international-fee-status students across its A100 and A101 Medicine courses. Because international places are limited and official course pages can be updated, applicants should check the current quota information again before applying.

University of Cambridge

Cambridge’s standard Medicine course also lasts six years. The first three years focus heavily on medical sciences before the final three years move into clinical study. College-based supervision is an important part of the academic experience.

The minimum A-level offer for 2027 entry is A*A*A, and applicants must take the UCAT. Cambridge does not publish one guaranteed UCAT cut-off for all applicants in advance.

For the 2027 standard Medicine course, Cambridge currently states that 22 places are available to applicants with overseas fee status. Its international tuition fee for 2027 has not yet been published, so applicants should not use the 2026 £70,554 Medicine fee as a confirmed 2027 figure.

Imperial College London

Imperial’s Medicine MBBS/BSc is a six-year integrated course. It combines medical science, clinical learning and an embedded BSc component within a major London medical and research environment.

For 2027 entry, the minimum A-level standard is A*AA, including Biology and Chemistry with an A* in one of those subjects. UCAT is required.

Imperial has not yet set its 2027 overseas tuition fee. Its published guide is the £58,600 overseas fee for 2026/27, so that figure should be used only for preliminary budgeting.

University College London (UCL)

UCL’s Medicine MBBS BSc runs for six academic years and uses an integrated approach across scientific and clinical learning. Students study in London and undertake training across UCL’s associated hospital and clinical locations.

The 2027 A-level requirement is A*AA, including Biology and Chemistry with an A* in either subject. All applicants must take UCAT.

UCL has published a 2027 international tuition fee of £59,600 per year. It also states that 24 of its 337 places for 2027 entry are available to overseas-fee applicants.

King’s College London

King’s standard Medicine MBBS is a five-year programme, with an optional intercalated degree extending the route to six years. Students train across a large London clinical network associated with King’s medical education.

For 2027 entry, the standard A-level requirement is A*AA, including Biology and Chemistry at grade A. UCAT is compulsory. King’s does not set one fixed UCAT threshold that applies to every admissions year, although the overall score and Situational Judgement result form part of selection.

University of Bristol

Bristol’s MB ChB Medicine lasts five years. The course combines scientific learning with early clinical exposure in hospital, community and primary-care environments.

The standard 2027 A-level offer is AAA, including Chemistry and one of Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics. UCAT is required and is an important part of interview selection once minimum academic requirements are met.

Bristol’s 2027 international fee has not yet been confirmed. Its published first-year international fee for 2026 entry is £45,800.

University of Leicester

Leicester’s standard Medicine MBChB is a five-year programme, with the route extending to six years where an intercalated degree is taken. One feature of the course is patient contact from the early stages of study, alongside clinical-skills training and anatomy teaching.

For 2027 entry, Leicester normally makes standard offers of A*AA. UCAT is required and selection for interview considers both academic performance and UCAT performance.

Leicester also accepts international applications to its A100 Medicine course but currently limits international intake to a maximum of 18 students per intake. Its 2027 international fees have not yet been confirmed.

Hull York Medical School

Hull York Medical School offers a five-year integrated Medicine programme. Its published academic profile differs from several of the A*AA universities above, which can make it a useful option to compare rather than simply focusing on traditional ranking positions.

For 2027 entry, applicants need three A levels including Biology and Chemistry with a minimum prediction of AAB. UCAT is required, and applicants must achieve a Situational Judgement Test result in Band 1, 2 or 3.

Standard undergraduate Medicine courses in England commonly last five or six years. Bristol, for example, uses UCAT heavily when selecting applicants for interview after minimum academic requirements have been met. Leicester combines academic and UCAT scoring. King’s considers the overall UCAT and Situational Judgement result without publishing one fixed threshold for every year. Other universities use their own year-specific shortlisting methods.
